Also known as sinus augmentation, sinus lift is a surgical technique that involves lifting the maxillary sinus membrane and placing a bone graft to increase bone volume near the molars and premolars in the upper jaw. This procedure is typically performed when there is insufficient bone height in the upper jaw for the placement of dental implants.
Sinus lift helps create a solid and secure foundation for dental implants, which is critical for the long-term success of restorative dental treatments.
What Are the Types of Sinus Lifts?
Open Sinus Lift: This method is used when the upper jawbone is very thin or insufficient. The dentist creates a window in the sinus region to lift the sinus membrane, placing a bone graft in the space created. Typically, a few months are required for bone formation before implants can be placed.
Closed Sinus Lift: A less invasive method applied when the upper jawbone has partial adequacy. In this approach, the dentist gently lifts the sinus membrane from the implant site, creating a small space beneath it to add a bone graft. Often, implants are placed while the bone heals, allowing the process to be completed in a single surgical procedure.
The sinus lift procedure involves the following steps:
Anesthesia: The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia to ensure patient comfort. In some cases, sedation may also be used.
Accessing the Sinus: The dentist or surgeon makes a small incision on the side of the upper jawbone to access the sinus. This incision creates a small window to reach the sinus area.
Lifting the Sinus Membrane: The membrane at the base of the sinus cavity is carefully lifted upward. This membrane is a thin structure that lines the interior of the sinus, and lifting it without tearing or damaging it is crucial to avoid complications during healing.
Placing the Bone Graft: Once the sinus membrane is lifted, a bone graft is added to the space created. This graft can be made from the patient’s own bone (autologous), animal-derived bone or synthetic materials.
Healing Process: After the bone graft is placed, a healing period of 4-9 months is required for the graft to integrate and form natural bone tissue. Once the new bone is fully developed, the site will be ready for implant placement.
Sinus lift is a safe and effective method, particularly for patients who lack sufficient bone volume for implant placement.
Recovery:
The recovery period after a sinus lift procedure can take several months. During this time, it is crucial to follow post-operative instructions and maintain oral hygiene for successful healing. Patients may experience some swelling, discomfort or minor bleeding after the procedure. Pain relievers and antibiotics may be prescribed to manage these symptoms. It is important to avoid blowing your nose or forcefully sneezing for at least two weeks after surgery, as this can disrupt the sinus lifting process. Regular check-ups with your dentist are essential during the healing period to monitor bone growth and implant integration. Once fully healed, dental implants can be placed into the new bone created by the sinus lift.
The procedure itself is not painful as it is performed under local anesthesia or sedation for those who need it. However, some discomfort, swelling, and minor bleeding may occur after the surgery. These can be managed with prescribed pain relievers and proper post-operative care.
As with any surgical treatment, there are potential risks, including infection, sinus membrane perforation, and graft failure. However, when performed by an experienced oral surgeon, these risks are minimal.

Sinus lift procedures utilize various graft materials to increase bone volume and support new bone formation.
These materials include:
Autografts: Bone tissue harvested from the patient’s own body, often from the jaw, chin, hip, or tibia. Autografts provide high biocompatibility as they are derived from the patient’s tissue, making them easily accepted by the body.
Allografts: Bone tissue obtained from human donors and processed through tissue banks for sterilization. Allografts are a less invasive option as they do not require a second surgical site.
Xenografts: Bone materials derived from animal sources, typically bovine or porcine tissues. Xenografts act as a scaffold for the patient’s natural bone to grow into and eventually transform into new bone tissue.
Alloplasts: Synthetic materials such as calcium phosphate or calcium sulfate. These materials mimic the properties of natural bone and promote bone formation without relying on biological sources.
The choice of graft material is determined based on the patient's health, the amount of bone needed, and personal preferences. Xenografts and alloplasts are commonly used in sinus lifting procedures due to their availability and the fact that they do not require additional surgical procedures.
Most patients can return to their normal activities within a few days. However, it is important to avoid strenuous activities and anything that can increase sinus pressure, such as blowing your nose or forceful sneezing, for at least two weeks.
Coverage for sinus lift surgery depends on your insurance policy and the reason for the procedure. It is recommended to consult your insurance provider and dental clinic to understand what costs will be covered.
